At McMaster University (Canada), I am a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Associate Member of the Departments of Surgery and Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact. I also hold an Adjunct Professorship in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (2020-2025). I currently hold research funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, including a Sex & Gender Science Chair (2020-2025), and a Foundation Grant (2019-2027). These grants fund the development of the GENDER-Q and GENDER-Q Kids.
Measuring outcomes that matter to patients is the focus of my research. I use a mixed methods, multi-phase approach to develop, validate, and implement questionnaires (PROMs) that measure how patients function and feel after interventions. Most of my research is in the area of pediatric health and plastic and reconstructive surgery. I am co-developer of the Q-Portfolio PROMs that are used worldwide in clinical care, health services, quality improvement, performance measurement, and comparative effectiveness research. There are >6000 licensees of Q-Portfolio instruments in >80 countries.
